The Year that Was: My Favorite Albums of 2025

Hard to believe that 2025 is on it's last legs, but here we are. Unlike the recent past, 2025 didn't have an album that clearly stood out to me. Instead of a top tier that steadily dipped, there were a lot of really great releases that could easily be at #1 and I would have felt good about it. Is the album that I put at #1 the trendy pick this year? Yeah, I guess, but I've ranked all of their releases in my top 50 throughout the years, so I'd like to think I'm not jumping on any bandwagon. They just happened to release the best rock album of the year. There were also a lot of albums that kept going in and out of my top 50. Releases by La Dispute, They Are Gutting a Body of Water, Petey USA, PLOSIVS, Militarie Gun, Momma, Lambrini Girls, Ben Kweller, Anxious, Case Oats, clipping, Danny Brown, to name a few, were all in my top 50 at some point during the year. The Year That Was: My Favorite Releases of 2024

What a fantastic year of music. 2024 saw new releases from some of my favorite acts of the 80s and 90s and they ranged from not bad (Soul Asylum, The Jesus and Mary Chain), to good (Black Crowes, Pixies, Smashing Pumpkins, Crowded House), to surprisingly great (Pearl Jam), to jaw-droppingly surreal how good it is (The Cure). Perry Farrell released singles by both Porno for Pyros and Jane's Addiction, the latter of which went on tour with their original lineup for the first time in decades, only to have an onstage meltdown at a stop in Boston on my birthday...so, thanks? Toronto's Fucked Up released 3 albums this year, one which was written, recorded, and released over the course of 24 hours while live streaming the process. The Smile released two albums this year...so, where's that new Radiohead? Kendrick Lamar released a surprise album a week before Thanksgiving. All in, I listened to over 620 new releases in 2024 (WFH has its benefits!) and it was difficult to just p...

The Year That Was: 2021 Favorite Albums

Here are my 50 favorite albums of 2021. Quite a variety, but they got me through another year of working from home. One of my favorite songs, though, didn't land on any album. "Like I Used To" , a collaboration between Sharon Van Etten and Angel Olsen, is a great track spotlighting each singer's strong, but different, vocals. I hope they do a full album together. For my Richmond friends, check out the video for "Hot and Heavy" by Lucy Dacus. Great to see a favorite show up in a video of a great song. There are more pop sounding albums this year than last. Not sure if I subconsciously gravitated towards happier music this year. There's the typical heavy stuff, though, and a couple of sad entries. Injury Reserve, an experimental hip-hop act, lost one of their members while recording the album. Watch the video for "Knees" and notice the silhouette of Stepa J. Groggs during his verses.
